Aiken is a city in Aiken County, South Carolina and is part of the CSRA. The population was 25,337 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Aiken County, and is the site of the University of South Carolina at Aiken. Aiken was recognized with the All-America City Award in 1997 by the National Civic League.
Incorporated in 1935 and named for William Aiken, founder of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. Between January, 1830 and October, 1833, William Aiken was instrumental in building what was then the longest railroad in the world (136 miles long), the Charleston & Hamburg line. The City developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a vacation site for wealthy Americans.
